I have walked through airports with my children, lost our bags of luggage in the Caribbean, and taken my kids to a place on the web that I thought was perfect but smells like mildew. I learned more from those experiences than I ever would have from a pretty listicle. Some islands are truly family friendly, and some are gorgeous but will challenge the marriage.
1. Maui, Hawaii
Maui is rightfully one of the top family islands. Beaches vary from placid and shallow (such as Baby Beach in Lahaina) to a little more adventurous for children of a more mature age for snorkeling. Unlike a passport, there is no hassle of having to bring your passport with you.
One of the things that surprised me was that it was really easy to get picky eaters to eat here. I have been seeing and hearing about plate lunches everywhere, shave ice everywhere, poke bowls everywhere and my kids didn’t have a meltdown. If you start early and bring snacks, you can take the Road to Hana with kids, but not with toddlers otherwise unless you like to be car sick for three hours with the kids. Instead of renting a condo in Wailea, rent a condo in Kihei and save hundreds of dollars per night.
2. Turks and Caicos
Providenciales Grace Bay Beach may be the most photo worthy beach I’ve ever walked on, and it’s shallow enough that a four-year-old can get out a pretty long way without you getting too panicky. The water is incomparably clear and warm at all times of the year and ideal for families seeking a traditional Caribbean experience as opposed to a cruise ship experience.

The prices for groceries are high on the island, so plan accordingly when you stay in a villa. It’s at IGA and Graceway Gourmet we shopped and the price was about double what we pay at home. If you’re looking for an all-inclusive resort with a water park featuring Sesame Street characters, then the Beaches resort is the place to go, but only for a pricey vacation. This is a worth of premium for Providenciales.
3. Aruba
Aruba only experiences hurricanes rarely. This is enough to make it stand out when taking a vacation in late summer or fall when airfares go down. Wide, clean and calm Eagle Beach, with palapas in a straight line for easy shade — no fighting for place.
We had a timeshare near Palm Beach and we were able to walk everywhere to restaurants, ice cream parlors and mini golf. The island is compact enough to drive end-to-end in about an hour, making it easy to have a beach day with time to visit the Arikok National Park. The Natural Pool was a favorite of my kids, although it did require a 4×4 and a bit of rough roads to get to. For the fun version rent a UTV.
4. Bali, Indonesia
Bali for kids might seem like a lot of work but it’s actually quite family friendly if you choose the right place. The choice is clear — Sanur is our go to place over Kuta. It is quieter, the beach is calmer and the sidewalks are even walkable with a stroller! For a few nights, Ubud is magical, particularly if your kids are old enough not to try to pet monkeys or rice terraces, although one monkey stole my daughter’s sunglasses, I’m still angry.
The number one benefit is that it’s inexpensive!
- Most areas have private villas with pools ranging from $60 to $100 per night.
- A full day hire of a private driver is about $40 to $50.
It’s affordable to live here, and the Balinese were really nice to the children. Be aware of tap water and street food for little tummies.
5. Bermuda
Though Bermuda is not in the tropics, the pink sand beaches and warm waters of the Gulf Stream make it feel like it is. If you have toddlers with you, and prefer to limit your overall flying time, the best news is that it’s only a two-hour flight from the U.S. East Coast.
It’s the beautiful one, but Church Bay is better for snorkeling, and it’s famous, too. Hired an electric car from the local company (no gas cars for tourists!) and drove everywhere — between beaches and the Royal Naval Dockyard — and the kids used the playground and splash pad to expend energy. The cost of Bermuda is expensive, but since it is so close, and also safe to travel to, it was worth the money with the little ones in tow.
6. Koh Samui, Thailand
Koh Samui is on the list of the top tropical islands for families to vacation, and Thailand’s definitely on it. There is infrastructure to begin with, but not so many people that it makes it feel like Phuket during high season.
Chaweng Beach was the most action-packed place to visit, but Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village offered the ideal combination of restaurants, shops and beach time. Anantara Bophut, for instance, caters to families with kid’s clubs, pool areas, and more. My favorite part was the night markets, my son had some satay while my daughter got a temporary henna tattoo. Those coming from the U.S. have long flights and I suggest a minimum of 10 days of travel is warranted.
7. Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
It’s so ridiculously beautiful on Seven Mile Beach — and the water remains shallow and gentle as far out as you can walk! Stingray City is the main attraction, yes it is touristy, but seeing my kids touch and feed wild stingrays, is one of our best travel memories. The Cayman Islands are a secure, clean, and orderly environment that is important when you’re handling little ones. The main language is English, and the U.S. dollar is the most common currency, with the food scene being better than you think. For dinner we went to a roadside place called Heritage Kitchen and had jerk chicken — it was the very best meal of the trip. IMO, Grand Cayman is the best place in the Caribbean to enjoy a family vacation without any hassle.
8. Fiji
Fiji surprised me. I was looking for a honeymoon destination, but the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands have resorts that cater to families. Our kids didn’t want to leave the Malolo Island Resort kids club either as we actually had some much needed adult vacation time!
The culture in Fiji is very community and kid-centric, and it’s evident in everything you do. By day 2 our kids were greeted by name by locals. Water activities include:
- Glass bottom boat tours
- Beginner snorkeling
- Crab hunting at low tide
It takes about 10 hours to fly from the West Coast, so it’s a commitment. However, if you can muster it, Fiji has something you won’t find on a short hop over to the Caribbean: a truly different cultural experience, set against a backdrop of tropical beauty.
9. Cozumel, Mexico
Cozumel is located just off the Yucatan Peninsula and has a more relaxed atmosphere than the mainland Cancun. The west side of the island features tranquil waters, making it a great location for young swimmers and snorkelers. Families enjoy a full day of activities including easy reef snorkeling directly from the shores of Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park, as well as a sea lion show at the end of the day.

The ferry from Playa del Carmen was fun for the kids and only about 45 minutes. The meals were cheap and tasty and street tacos was the go-to for lunch. Be aware; the eastern shore is fast flowing and unsuitable for swimming. Travel along the west side and you will experience a leisurely, affordable and true escape from the island.
10. Mauritius
Not many people would ever consider Mauritius as a holiday destination for their family but this Indian Ocean island has some of the best beaches I have seen anywhere. The lagoon is quiet in Flic en Flac and also in Belle Mare and the resorts here are more likely to have kids’ clubs built in, rather than added on as an extra.
It’s a fusion of French, Indian, Creole and Chinese culture, and the cuisine is amazing, and diverse enough to please even the most fussy eater in the family. The children went to a nature park called Casela, where they were able to see the giant tortoises and zipline. For families from Europe, Africa and Asia, it’s an amazing fact not often reported about Mauritius, but the time required for North American travel to get there is quite lengthy. The most beautiful setting for a beach day, was the Le Morne peninsula, which is a UNESCO site.
