How to Choose the Perfect Beach Vacation 2026
How to Choose the Perfect Beach Vacation
Finding just the right beach getaway may seem easy until you arrive at the overcrowded seaweed-strewn beach and realize you went off course. I can relate to that person. Twice, actually. If you don’t plan on purpose, you’re unlikely to have the fantasy match the reality. The good news? There are some astute tips to make before booking that can make all the difference. These are some of the things that really count, and that is what I’ve been able to do for years.
Start With What You Actually Want, Not What Looks Good on Instagram
Before you start searching for any resort on Google or even after you’ve watched a bunch of resorts on TikTok, take some time and be honest to yourself about the kind of vacation you want. While this may seem obvious, it’s something that most people forget. They view a stunning image of Tulum or Bali, and simply… book it! Then they come and find out that quite a bit different than what they had in mind, they wanted quiet relaxation, not a party scene with DJ sets at the pool.
Inquire, “What is the truth of the matter? Would you prefer to read books and sleep or would you prefer to see the sea, swim with the waves and discover the world? Do you travel alone, in pairs or as a family? Is evening entertainment important to you? So, when it comes to food, are you a street taco person or a sit-down seafood dinner person?
I had one time reserved a holiday in the Hotel Zone in Cancun, due to the all-inclusive deal being too good to be true. I wanted to be left in peace and quiet. I was surrounded by the spring breakers for 4 days. Lesson learned. The vibe is more important than the price, all the time.

Make a list of the top 3 priorities prior to any research. Perhaps it should say “calm water, walkable restaurant, under $2,000.” That is your filter, for everything else.

Figure Out Your Budget Before You Fall in Love With a Destination
Financial stress is the worst thing that can happen when vacationing, especially after vacation. I have my budget before I even check out my potential site, and not only do I have the accommodation, food and activities, but also a bit of extra for the things I never thought of. That hire of that paddle board. The sunset cruise that you persuaded yourself to go on. The actual great dinner of lobsters.
Here is a very basic outline that is effective for me. I divide my budget between three parts — one third for airfares and travel, one third for lodging and one third for all the other items. If it is not within the numbers then I move on.
Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam) and Central America (to the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, and Nicaragua) are places where you will get a longer haul for your buck. Hawaii and Maldives are gorgeous but you’ll find yourself in a debt trap. When it comes to the Riviera Maya in Mexico, it’s just on the medium level.
A small piece of advice: don’t simply look at the hotel prices, check around the area and out for a few dinners! I have been living at an AirBnB for $100 a night when the cheapest dinner was $60 per person. This will quickly accumulate over a week.

How to Choose the Perfect Beach Vacation Based on Timing
Where you travel can’t be beat when it comes to the importance of what you’re doing while on the road. Each beachside resort has its sweet spot and that’s typically not when everyone else’s.
The Caribbean hurricane season is from June through November. Of course you are not guaranteed to encounter a storm, but it becomes a necessity to have insurance coverage, and some islands (such as Barbuda, or the Bahamas outer islands) do have a real risk. In other words, in Greece for example, during shoulder season (late September, early October) you will have warm water, fewer people and lower prices. My personal favorite window.
Bali’s rainy season is from November to March. I visited once in December — every afternoon it rained for 2 hours. The rest of the day was perfect and July prices were 50% lower. If you can endure a brief daily rain shower, you can use “cheats” for the rainy season.
Check School Calendars and Local Holidays
Holiday weeks in Europe (August) and US spring break weeks can quadruple the number of people and treble the price. My travel dates are always compared with school holidays in the US, UK and in the country that I am traveling to. A quick search will save you from showing up to a very crowded beach that you thought you’d be the only one at.
Pick the Right Type of Beach for Your Trip
All beaches are not created equal and people make the most common mistake here. There are a lot of people who decide to take a beach vacation. You have to cut down.
For still, sparkling water to enjoy swimming, check out the Caribbean, especially the west coast of Aruba, Grand Cayman or the US Virgin Islands. Calmer surf is found on west-facing shores which are protected from swells coming in from the Atlantic Ocean.
Surfers are looking for something totally different. The waves are consistent along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, or the Algarve region of Portugal or the south coast of Sri Lanka.
Homes with young children should have shallow entry points, soft waves and ideally a shady area. This is an underrated aspect of the Gulf Shores, AL and panhandle beach resorts. Another gem: Sanibel Island — kids spend hours collecting shells.
For dramatic cliffs and scenery rather than soft sand, the Amalfi Coast, Big Sur (not quite a beach, but pretty stunning) and the Azores are a completely different type of beach.
I have a note in my phone that has beaches listed by vibe. When people say “let’s go on a trip,” I don’t have to doom scroll for three weeks to find options, it’s just a second of doing something nerdy.

Research Accommodations Like You Mean It
The websites of hotels will always tell you the best room, best angle, best light. I don’t trust them any more than I trust a dating profile photo. Here’s my real life beach lodging experience.
I check Google Maps satellite view. I want to know how far the property really is from the beach. There are times when the term “steps from the ocean” refers to a 15-minute stroll beside a highway. Satellite view is not biased.
Second, I check the reviews on Booking.com and TripAdvisor, but only the reviews from the last 6 months. Hotels switch hands and/or renovate or decline. If the rating is 5-star in 2019, it doesn’t mean much in 2025.
Third, I see photographs people have posted of their stay, rather than the property itself. Real guest photos reveal real room size, the real view and if the pool is really blue or just well done.
If it’s a beach vacation, I always opt for an outdoor area, patio, balcony or shared terrace. Being outside after a day in the sun, sitting outside with a cold drink while the breeze comes in is half the vacation right there.
Don’t Overlook Safety and Practical Stuff
This is a non-glamorous part but it still counts. There are some places on the beach where rip currents are powerful or there aren’t many medical facilities available, or the water isn’t clean at all, but no one talks about it in the well-written travel blogs.
I do some checking before making my reservation:
- Swim safety: Does the beach have lifeguards? Do you know of any rip current areas? This information is typically on the local tourism boards and NOAA website.
- Water quality: Certain popular beaches around major cities are contaminated with bacteria, particularly during rainy weather. Heal the Bay is a publisher of beach report cards for California. There are similar resources in other areas.
- Access to health care: If going to a remote island, know where the hospital is. When travelling abroad, especially to remote areas, travel insurance with medical evacuation is essential (World Nomads or Safety Wing is a good choice).
- Local advisories: The US State Department travel advisory page takes just 2 minutes and can save you from making a trip to a region in which there are security issues.
This was a lesson I’ve learned the hard way in a remote area of the Philippines where the nearest clinic was a two-hour boat ride away, and an infection based on a minor coral cut was just that. I always bring a simple first aid kit and am aware of medical help before I get there.
Plan Activities, But Leave Room to Do Nothing
The ideal beach vacations I have had were 60% planned and 40% spontaneous. Gone is the laid-back beach vibe you came for when you’re overbooked.

I book 1 or 2 activities ahead of time — usually those that sell out or require booking. A snorkeling trip to Turks and Caicos, a cooking class in Crete, a sunset sail in Key West. I’ll work out all the other stuff when I get there.
Talk to locals. One night when I was in Puerto Rico, I was at a small beach bar, and the bartender took a break and led me to a secret cove that was not listed anywhere in the guidebooks. I have a lot of great travel experiences that I had not seen in any blog post or video on YouTube and they were all recommended to me on the ground.
However, during high season, make reservations for popular activities in advance. For the Santorini boat trips or Galápagos boat trips, it is not unusual for them to be booked weeks in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the Cheapest Time to Book a Beach Vacation?
The shoulder season offers the best of both worlds: weather and price. This is late April to mid-June and from mid-November to Christmas in the Caribbean. September and early October are ideal months for visiting Europe’s beaches. Another 10–20 percent on airfare alone can be saved by booking flights on Tuesday or Wednesday and by using Google Flights’ price tracking.
How Far in Advance Should I Plan a Beach Trip?
Popular tourist destinations may require a booking of three to four months in advance, at least. Popular holidays such as Maui, Mykonos and Tulum get booked up quickly. Book 4–6 weeks in advance and you may be able to find great deals and go somewhere less popular if you are flexible with your dates.
How Do I Choose the Perfect Beach Vacation for Kids?
Look for low-key beaches that are shallow, have nearby restrooms, and shade. For those with children, all-inclusive resorts with a children’s club, such as Club Med or Beaches Resorts, are a huge burden off parents. Beaches on the Gulf Coast in Florida and the U.S. Virgin Islands are always family-friendly spots.
Is an All-Inclusive Resort Worth It for a Beach Vacation?
This will depend on how you travel. All-inclusives are great if you’re looking for no decision fatigue and a budget that’s to be expected. Some good value can be had at Hyatt Ziva and Riu resorts. However, if you enjoy dining out and visiting local eateries, you’ll feel like a prisoner. All-inclusives are for short trips, independent bookings are for longer than 5 days.
What Should I Pack for a Beach Vacation That Most People Forget?
A good reef-safe sunscreen (I prefer Sun Bum), a portable phone charger, a dry bag for boat days, and a lightweight cover-up for walking into restaurants. Most people also forget the basic medicines such as ibuprofen and anti-diarrheal tablets which you will definitely need to have on hand if you’re in a remote location.
Conclusion
Choosing the perfect beach vacation depends on knowing yourself, having a sensible budget and doing enough research to avoid the obvious pitfalls. You don’t have to make all the decisions before you book, but you will have made some before you get there and that will make the whole experience. What’s your ideal beach vibe, chill or adventurous?
